Lesson 1 Part 2 - Political Protest
For the final two hours we (as a whole strand) met up to discuss another part of our unit. This part of the political performance workshop is the political protest. This is where we all separate into groups and think of a topic that is a big political issue in the UK to protest for. We all agreed in terms of political we could choose a topic, whether its big P political or small P political. Big P political means the big topics like the government, the media, business, education etc. Small P political means the topics involved with other broader subjects for example: female rights that come into the broader topic of Feminism.
I got into a group with Phoebe, Angelica, Lloyd, Harmony and Leanne. After a long time we realised that we all have different things we are extremely passionate about but we could only protest about one. We wanted to be original and different from the rest of the strand. So from the list of ideas we eliminated the ones that other groups were doing similar protests to and after that we were left with two ideas. Education and Chemical Warfare. This was a bit difficult to choose from considering three of us were for education and had ideas on how to protest and get our information and opinions across. Additionally, having an activity that could get the audience involved and help them learn something as well. However, the other three in our group were for chemical warfare because it was something really important that is happening to this day and it’s a subject that doesn’t get talked about a lot. We have stories, information and ideas of ways of how to protest and present it. Due to half the group going for one idea and the other half going for the other idea, we got into a bit of conflict and couldn’t agree on one idea. It wasn’t until the end that we just went along with the chemical warfare idea, only to avoid anymore conflict and complications.
